What Type of Jobs Can I do With a Diploma of Accounting?
Although the most common (and unfair) image of accountants is that of a staid middle age male wearing a daggy cardigan or a boring business suit, the reality today is much more exciting; with the advent of the internet in the early 1990’s and other socio-economic forces since reshaping the accounting industry into a much more dynamic force than once was the case. Nowadays, a qualified accountant has a variety of potential roles to choose from, with those listed below a few of the more common ones that open the door to an exciting career pretty much anywhere in the world!
Bookkeeper:
One of the most common types of accounting professionals are bookkeepers who according to SEEK are responsible for recording the everyday transactions of businesses and organisations, which also includes producing the necessary financial reports to keep management informed of their position. Bookkeepers are typically found in small to medium sized business/organisations and are either self-employed or “on the books” themselves.
Certified Practicing Accountant:
A Certified Practicing Accountant (or CPA for short) is a fully-qualified accountant who is also a member of the Australian professional industry association of the same name. This type of accountant will generally perform a similar role to a Bookkeeper but with the addition of extra training and professional development. CPA’s also tend to work for larger business and organisations or are employed by professional accounting firms.
Forensic Accountant:
A highly specialised role, forensic accountants are responsible for utilising their accounting skills to closely investigate discrepancies and inaccuracies between financial statements in order to uncover the true state of a business or organisation’s financial position. Individuals who fulfil this role will typically have undertaken further study and qualifications after gaining years of professional experience under their belt.
Tax Agent:
Tax agents possess deep knowledge of Australia’s tax system and use this knowledge to help prepare tax returns for individuals, small to medium sized businesses and community organisations on a fee-for- service basis. They also help ensure individuals have met their tax obligations whilst legally minimising the amount of tax they are liable to pay going forward.
