In the digital age, students are taking advantage of online study options and reaping the benefits of flexible study schedules.
It’s no secret that we live in a digital age. With just the press of a button or the swipe of a screen, we can speak to family overseas, have our favourite meal delivered to our door, arrange for a car to drive us to brunch or even find a date for Friday night. These advances in technology are changing the way we connect, interact and even the way we study. For older generations, university meant sitting in crammed lectures halls, attending tutorials, deciphering the scrawly handwriting of tutors and long nights in the library pouring over dusty old textbooks.
These days, you don’t even need to get off the couch to go to university. Modern day students are able to watch lectures anywhere, anytime. We can download e-books and read them on the train. We can email our tutors at any hour of the day. Online study is quickly becoming the preferred option. In fact, a report by the Grattan Institute found that as many as one-in-five domestic students now study online.
It’s easy to see the appeal. Online study provides unprecedented flexibility. It allows students to study at their own pace and personalise their timetable to fit their lifestyle. Holding down a full-time job or running your own business? Raising a family? Living far away from campus and dreading the commute? Or maybe you simply want to be able to study in your pyjamas (hey, no judgment). Online study means you can still get the degree, without having to sacrifice your career, your family, your time or your comfort. Sure, you may have to swap Netflix for the occasional lecture, and maybe hit the (e)-books on the weekend. But that’s a pretty small price to pay for a degree that is completely adaptable to your lifestyle.
As if you needed more reasons to switch to online study, online courses are often significantly cheaper and offer flexibly payment plan options, meaning you get the qualification without the dreaded HECS debt. And all that while studying in pyjamas in bed? Win-win!
