The Covid-19 pandemic saw an increase in people losing their jobs, transforming their working lifestyle, or moving entirely to a new field of work. This flexible career trend is only set to increase in the coming years. The Australian government’s recent Job and Skills Summit has revealed why so many Australians are quitting their jobs and moving to new roles.
A recent survey of 800 Australians from RMIT Online has revealed that over a third of respondents have changed careers in the past 12 months, with the most common cause being higher salaries and promotions. The survey also revealed how much of a pay increase workers are changing jobs for, with 61% of people moving roles for a pay rise less than $10,000.
The survey also found that despite the pay increase, a lot of Australians are feeling dissatisfied at their work as they do not feel valued by their employer. In fact, 57% of respondents stating that feeling undervalued is their primary reason for their career dissatisfaction.
Overall, the majority of job movement is occurring due to wage increases, which are especially valuable in these times of high living costs and high inflation. However, there is increasing movement coming from the satisfaction perspective, in terms of work environment, work culture and future career opportunities.
